Hilton Hughes
Feb. 5, 1927 – Apr. 24, 2020
Hilton Hughes passed away on Friday in Lanigan Hospital. He goes to join our mom, Gladys June (Toots) (2009) and our brother, Ern (2019).
He leaves to mourn: Judy (Ken) Dumanski, Lillie James, June (Jim) Reid, Cheryl Hughes plus grandchildren: Jason (Lindsay), Kris, Allison (Brandon), Fischer (Marina), Walker (Alexis), Kevin (Janice), Matthew (Chelsea), Joshua (Mal), Jody and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin sister Hilda (Forrest) Pederson, sister-in-law Becky Jones, Toots’ family: Vernell (Walter) Freybe, Shirley (Bob) Gordon, Carol, Clarence (Edna) and Vern (Shirley Ann) Fischer.
He was predeceased by his parents, step-mother Bertha Grace (Jones), brothers Melvin (Nonie) and Walter Hughes, sisters Margaret (Albert) Krause and Erma (Don) Edwards, step-brother Barclay Jones, son-in-law Bruce James as well as June’s parents Ted and Mary Fischer and brother-in- law Edward (Sod) Fischer.
Hilton was born in Cupar to W. E. (Ernie) Hughes and Lillie Gertrude Ward (she passed away when Hilton and Hilda were 2 years old). The Hughes family moved from Cupar to Lockwood in 1941 and that’s where Hilton resided until his passing.
His ashes will be buried in Lockwood Cemetery – because of CoVid 19, no funeral arrangements are planned at this date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Lockwood Cemetery or a charity of your choice.

To the family of Hilton Hughes. Please accept my deepest condolences on his passing. I have many memories of Hilton during his baseball playing and coaching days. I grew up in Colonsay and played on the Senior Monarch team for many years. Was introduced to Hilton at the Lockwood ball tournament when I was 14 years old. He treated me like part of his family right away. I remember watching him and wondering how one man could have so much energy, who loved the game and was so respected by all those who met him. In 1973, a number of the Colonsay Monarchs joined the Lockwood Braves with Hilton coaching. We won the League and Provincial Championship that year. I still have my warm-up jacket which Hilton arranged for all of us to receive. Hilton made the world a better place for many of us. He is gone but not forgotten. The memories he helped create are ours to treasure forever. My hope is that knowing how many others he has left these memories with will be some comfort to his family during these sad times. A life well lived, a person well loved and respected. Rest in peace Hilton.

Not knowing too many of Hilton's family, I can only say that Ross and I had many occasions to be at the same venues as he. His wit could have quite a barb to it, but you knew that it was all in jest! Whether it was at a sporting event or a social gathering, he was a person to be reckoned with! I remember that we attended his 65th birthday in Lockwood - and that doesn't really seem to be that long ago! So many great memories - rest in Peace, Hilton!

We will miss Hilton. What a character. I started officiating with him as a youngster, learned lots from him. Then in the summer had to play baseball against him when we played the Lockwood Braves. Lots of memories Hilton, Rest In Peace.
