Obituary for Jim Johnson

JOHNSON: James (Jim)
May 4, 1931 - November 18, 2022
On November 18, 2022, Jim Johnson passed away peacefully in Watrous, Saskatchewan. Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years Sheila (nee Anderson), daughter Poppy Petersen (Sherwin), son Merv Johnson (Angie), grandchildren Christa Cardinal (Greg, Jorja, Harper), Angie Benson (Jeff), Colleen Sloan (Ryan, Gabe, Luke), Austin Johnson (Natalie, Nohl) and sister Evelyn Pfeifer. Jim was predeceased by son-in-law Roy Gill, son Perry Johnson and grandson Shane Johnson.
Jim was born and raised in the family farmhouse at Young Saskatchewan. Jim attended Morris School and completed his high school studies in Young. While Jim was a strong academic student, he was consumed with a desire to farm. Therefore, Jim farmed for his entire working life.
Jim was a meticulous farmer, working long hours as a mixed farmer raising hundreds of hogs and growing thousands upon thousands of bushels of wheat and barley over 40 years.
Jim was a great family man providing ample food, clean clothes and a safe to place to call home. As a father, Jim drove many children to baseball and hockey competitions all over Saskatchewan.
Jim was a loyal supporter of the Young Co-Op and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. He would insist on purchasing damaged fruit from the Young Co-Op Store, refusing to pick only the best fruit, stating, “someone needs to buy it.” This could be frustrating to his family.
Jim and Sheila retired from the farm and resided in Young for many years before moving to Watrous to spend their remaining years.
During and after his farming career, Jim was a dedicated grandfather. Jim built toys for his grandchildren, took the kids camping, fishing, skating and swimming. He walked all 3 of his granddaughters down the aisle at their weddings. He pitched baseballs while sitting precariously on a chair so that his 9 and 11-year-old grandsons could learn how to hit a ball.
Jim even gave a surprise appearance as Batman one Halloween to the delight of his young grandsons.
Jim will be missed, but our memories of him will always be of a kind man - slow to anger and always fair in his dealings with his family and anyone he met.
Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Young, SK on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Covenant Cemetery at a later date.
