Obituary for Gary Mooney

MOONEY: Gary A.
August 7, 1956 – March 4, 2021
Gary Mooney passed away alongside his family on March 4, 2021, at the Watrous Hospital after a short battle with Leukemia. Gary was born in Imperial, Saskatchewan on August 7, 1956 to Gordon and Alice Mooney. He attended Imperial School until grade 11 and entered the work force thereafter. Gary’s first job out of school was at Mel-Cam, currently known as RiteWay. He farmed alongside his dad for several years and then went on to long haul trucking with Bobby Lewis. In 1992, he started working for the R.M. of Big Arm as a grader operator and then foreman. While working at all of his other jobs, he was able to fit in driving the school bus for 47 years. In the winter months, Gary enjoyed playing minor hockey, continuing on to play for the Imperial Sabres senior team. During the spring and summer, you would often find him on the ball field playing for the local ball team. Gary met the love of his life, Rhonda Van Damme, in 1978 and they were married August 9, 1980. They raised their three children on the family farm west of Imperial and then moved into town in 1997. Gary continued his love of hockey by coaching his son’s minor hockey team. Over the years, you could always find Gary watching or attending the kids’ sporting events, including those for his granddaughter Alexa. Gary always spent time with friends and family whether it was on the golf course, sitting on the deck, or around the fire. Gary was always up for a family road trip such as Disneyland in 1997, Whitehorse in 2001 and 2012, and Texas in 2011. Gary’s love of music led him and Rhonda to enjoy many concerts, and summers spent at Craven. Gary will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Rhonda; children: Jennifer (Mike), Kyle, and Brett (Eden); grandchild: Alexa and step-grandchildren: Bailey, Chloe and Tyson; his mother Alice; sisters: Bonnie (Howie), Maureen (Linda), and Alison (Shaun); father-in-law: Ernest Van Damme; brother-in-law: Randy (Debbie) and Jason (Jade); sister-in-law: Karla (Mark); and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary was pre-deceased by his father Gordon Mooney and mother-in-law Eileen Van Damme.
