Obituary for Betty Bennett

Betty Bennett, aged 93 years old, passed away at Watrous District Health Complex after a short illness on Sunday, May 26, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born in Rhein, Sask. on March 1, 1926 to George and Ethel Allen. Betty and Lawrie met in Yorkton, Sask. and were married on June 17, 1945. In 1950, Lawrie’s job with the CN took them to Hudson Bay, Sask. and then on to Porcupine Plain, Sask. Betty worked at full time jobs as a cashier, meat market clerk and school bus driver, while raising a family of three. In 1967 the family moved to Watrous, Sask. for a better job opportunity. Betty worked side by side with Lawrie as a school bus driver and gas station owner/operator. She was a very compassionate person, caregiver to her mother as well as Lawrie’s father for many years. Betty loved children and babysat for various families in Watrous, the children referred to her as “Grandma Betty”. She was very active in the community, delivering meals on wheels, member of the United Church, a Rebekah and enjoyed the time she spent at the Drop-In Centre. In their younger years, Betty and Lawrie were avid square dancers, traveling across the province and receiving many badges.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, husband, grandson Brent, four brothers and eight sisters. She is survived by one sister: Joan Schnell, three children: Darlene (Keith) Beckstrand, Rob (Karen) Bennett, Dawn Bennett (John Laybourne), four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Nothing was more important to Betty than her family, she will be missed beyond words.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Fotheringham’s Funeral Chapel, Watrous, SK. A Private Family Interment will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the United Church would be appreciated.
