Obituary for Joan Schroeder

We are sad to announce the passing of our mother, Isabel Sara (Joan) Schroeder of Watrous, Saskatchewan on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. Joan died at home in the loving presence of her family after battling cancer for the past several months. She was born in Rosetown, on Christmas day in 1936, a gift to her parents Neil and Edith McLeod and siblings Alfred, Doreen, and Margie. Joan spent a happy childhood on the family’s farm and moved with them into town when she was a young girl. After completing high school in Rosetown Joan decided to become a nurse and was exceedingly proud to have completed her training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. She treasured the relationships that she made in those years. In 1958, together with her friend and fellow nurse Marleane Young, Mom got her first job in Watrous and never left again. She soon met her husband, Ben Schroeder, and they were married in 1959. Together they raised four children; Karen (Fraser Mark), Keith, Blair (Shar), and Lesley (Greg Carlson). Mom was active in her community and particularly enjoyed her years as a member of the Kinette Club of Watrous. She was in fact, a charter member of this club. She was the epitome of a working mother and nursed either part time or full time until she was 73 years old. Nursing was not only our mom’s chosen career – it was her passion. She was an excellent, talented, and well respected nurse who practiced with compassion, empathy, and expertise for all of her working life. Mom was a gifted singer with a beautiful soprano voice. She started singing in a choir when she was a teenager and continued to sing in choirs for most of her life. Mom loved her friends as much as she did her family and was fortunate to have many decades old friendships that continued until her death. Mom had a keen intellect and an indomitable spirit both of which stood her well throughout her life. She loved reading, gardening, music of all kinds, shopping, and visiting. In addition to her children, she is survived by 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. We loved our mom deeply and will miss her for the rest of our lives. Her funeral service will take place at Watrous United Church on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Watrous Manitou Beach Heritage Centre or STARS. Arrangements are entrusted to Fotheringham- McDougall Funeral Service. Expressions of sympathy may be left at fotheringham-mcdougall.com
