Obituary for Lorraine June "Lorry" Walker (Shaw)
WALKER - Lorraine June (Lorry) passed away peacefully at Regina General Hospital on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the age of 86 years with her daughter Diane by her side. Lorry was predeceased by: her husband of 58 years, Fred; daughter, Karen Braun; parents, Bernard and Violet Shaw; brothers, Brian Shaw and Tom Shaw; and one great-grandchild. She is survived by: daughter, Diane (Wes) Kirk; sister, Jeanne Shaw; grandchildren, Keith (Susan) Braun, Kenny Braun (Heidi), Kelly Kirk, Stacy Kirk (Dale), Nina Moskal-Gorrill, and Tammy Somers; great-grandchildren, Rebecka Braun, Nikolai Somers, Carol Gilbertson, Cameron Gilbertson, Kendrick Braun, and Kaysen Braun and many nieces and nephews.
Lorry was born at Whitewood, SK, on July 8, 1932. Her family moved a lot during her childhood, living in different locations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Lorry graduated from high school in Humboldt, SK. On October 31, 1951, she married Fred Walker and they made their living farming in the Govan, SK, area. In 1953 they were blessed with their first child, Karen, followed by Diane in 1956. In 1971, Lorry and Fred purchased the Govan Hotel which they operated alongside farming until 1975. In 1975, they continued with just farming. They spent their summers living at their farmhouse and the winters in their house in Govan. In 1994, they retired and left the farmhouse permanently. After Fred’s passing in 2010, Lorry moved to Nokomis into one of the Hiawatha Homes.
Lorry and Fred were well-known in the Govan area for their toy making, which they often had on display at local craft shows. Fred made wooden farm toys, while Lorry made all sorts of toys out of plastic canvas and was also a very talented knitter. She carried on with knitting until later on in life, making everything from sweaters, to slippers, to dishcloths and hand towels. Lorry enjoyed gardening in the summer and canning in the fall and she also loved to bake. Every Christmas each family member would receive some of her delicious shortbread cookies and she always baked the Christmas dinner dessert - pies of many different flavours as well as her famous lemon dessert. In their younger years, Lorry and Fred loved to dance, and often attended the Saturday night dances in Govan. Lorry and Fred had pets most of their lives that they loved very much, their last being a very spoiled dog Perky and cats Maggie and Jigs. They always enjoyed feeding birds as well. Later in life, while living in Nokomis, Lorry enjoyed spending time with the other ladies in town having coffee at Kuan’s Cafe.
Lorry was loved dearly by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. A graveside memorial service will be held in Summer 2019. Donations to Govan Community Gym would be appreciated by the family. Fotheringham-McDougall Funeral Service in care of arrangements.
