June 2, 1937 – March 5, 2016

The death of The Rev. Dr. Alison West of Watrous, SK occurred Saturday, March 5, 2015 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, with her family by her side.

Alison West (nee Wilson) was born in Falkirk, Scotland on June 2, 1937. When she was a child her family moved to Slough in the south of England. At 16 Alison left school to work and help support the family. At this time she was also very involved with her local Methodist church. In 1960 Alison was accredited as a Local Preacher in the Methodist Church in England. As of 2015 Alison had been preaching for 58 years.

In 1963 Alison was married to Roy West. They moved to Entebbe, Uganda and then in 1969 the family moved to Canada. They lived in several places in Quebec and Ontario, and finally moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1981. Throughout this time Alison taught intermediate Sunday school and volunteered as a lay preacher at the United Church.

In Regina The Rev. David Iverson encouraged Alison to apply for the position of Staff Associate at Rosemont United Church. She then applied to St. Andrew’s College to become an ordained minister.

During her final year of college Alison served half time at Watrous Young Pastoral Charge.
After her ordination in 1990 she was called to Watrous Young Pastoral Charge and served there for the next 15 years.

Officially Alison retired in 2004 at the age of 67. Although she continued to serve at various churches as well as at St. Andrew’s College until January of this year.

Throughout her life Alison enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and the company of her friends. She also loved to travel and particularly driving across country visiting family and friends.

Alison was predeceased by her parents and her brother John. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth; her son Peter (Shelly), her daughter Alison (Dave) and their son Calder, and her friend Sylvia.

A Memorial Service will be held in Watrous United Church, Watrous, SK on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in Watrous Cemetery.
