Obituary for Duane Alfred Engele

ENGELE, Duane Alfred
Oct. 17, 1938 – Dec. 13, 2018
Duane Engele, aged 80 years, passed away peacefully at Pasqua Hospital, Regina on Thursday, December 13, 2018 after a hard fought battle to cancer and other health issues. Duane was born in Humboldt, Sask., second child of Hugo and Marjorie Engele. He completed his schooling in Carmel, Sask. He worked in the International Harvester implement industry for 35 years alongside his dad and uncle known as “Engele Brothers”. In 1955, the family bought the IH dealership in Watrous and moved their house and family to Watrous. Duane played hockey with the Watrous Warriors. He and Katie first met at the skating rink. Duane later married the love of his life, Kathleen McDonald and they spent the next 62 years together. Out of this union came two boys, Keith and Kirby. Their life was very busy with Duane’s sport activities, the boy’s activities and working alongside his dad. Duane was a member of Watrous Kinsmen and K-40, Watrous Curling Club and Manitou Beach Golf Club. Duane was fortunate to get to know many young curlers while coaching and mentoring high school students. He enjoyed hunting with his friends in early years. Being passionate and talented in curling led him to win many competitions. Duane loved being around his family and grandchildren and attended all of their school activities. Last fall, he attended the first wedding of his grandchildren. Last week he was still talking about “making Hugo candy”, which was a family Christmas tradition. We love you, rest in peace. Duane is survived by his loving wife and best friend Katie, sons Keith (Shelley) and Kirby (Kathleen); grandchildren Jeremy (Jen), Taylor (Haley), Jillian, Jarvis, Jadi (Brennan) and Derek (Madisyn); brothers and sisters Larry (Marg) – Carrot River, Janet (Mac) Laird – Watrous, Donna (Larry) – Fort McMurray, Jean Isherwood – Watrous, Gord (Susan) – Sydney; brothers-in-law Alex Munro – Manitou Beach and Chris Olafson – Morden, Man. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugo and Marjorie; sister Esther Munro; brothers-in-law Gary Isherwood, Chuck McDonald and wife Joyce; father and mother-in-law Charlie and Isa McDonald; and sister-in-law Isabel Olafson. A Memorial service was held at Watrous Civic Centre on December 18 conducted by Pastor Darren Holland. Urnbearer was Jeremy Engele. Allan and Valerie Miettinen and Ron and Diane Gross were register attendants. Ushers were Todd Isherwood and Monte Dewey. Ervin Gross and the grandchildren gave the eulogy and tributes. Soloist was Karen Schroeder Mark and pianist was Melanie Manson. Private family interment followed at Watrous Cemetery. Memorial donations directed to Watrous Ambulance Equipment Fund would be appreciated. To leave online condolences, tributes or to make a donation, please visit
