Obituary for Dolores Florence Hendry (Kelso)

Dolores Florence Hendry was born on Sept 5,1933 to Florence and Charles Kelso at Buffalo Gap, Saskatchewan. She passed away at the Nokomis Health Centre on Sunday, November 19, 2017. Dolores was raised in Big Beaver, Gainsborough and Buffalo Gap. With her dad in the butchering business they moved frequently for work. Dolores was athletic in school, she loved to play all sports and enjoyed figure skating. Most of her school years were spent at Foam Lake, Young, Holdfast and Davidson, where her dad was in charge of the set up and operation of the new butcher shops in the Coop stores. Dolores moved to Nokomis in 1952, where she worked as a nursing aide at the Nokomis Union Hospital. She met Russell Hendry and they were married on Sept 18 1953. They had 5 children. In 1966 Russell and Dolores purchased Hendry's Western Service. Russell was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1967 and continued working at the family business until retiring in 1980, when Bob and Ron acquired ownership. The majority of Dolores' life was spent as a care giver. While raising 5 children, Dolores was busy boarding mechanics, camping at the lake for swimming lessons along with boys in hockey and ball, girls with 4H Horse club, gymkhana & figure skating. Dolores was very involved in all types of community activities; United Church, Ag society, homecomings, rink committee, Saskatoon Health Region, meals on wheels, visiting seniors and offering rides. Dolores favourite pastime was music and dancing! Dolores and Russell enjoyed minding their 11 grandchildren on a regular basis. Family was most important. Dolores was a huge supporter of her grandchildren in all sports, following games & competitions closely so she could report back to Russell. Dolores joined the Nokomis Hospital Auxiliary in 1959. She received her 50 year pin in 2009 for her volunteer services. Also in 2009, Dolores was the recipient of the prestigious National Opal Caregiver Award. The Nokomis M.S. Support group nominated Dolores to be considered for this award as they had watched and heard of her care of Russell for many years.
